Legendary French Musician Was Known for His Jazz Interpretations of Bach

French pianist, composer and bandleader Jacques Loussier, who sold millions of records with his jazz adaptations of the compositions of Johann Sebastian Bach, died March 5, 2019 in Blois, France. He was 84 years old.

Loussier was born in Angers, France on October 26, 1934, and began playing the piano at the age of 10. He attended the Paris Conservatory, where he studied classical music, but became interested in jazz. In the 1950s, Loussier formed a trio that performed a fusion of jazz and classical music, and in the 1960s he began arranging Bach's works for jazz.

Loussier's jazz interpretations of Bach were a critical and commercial success, and he released over 40 albums during his career. He toured extensively with his trio and performed for audiences around the world. Loussier also composed original works, including film scores and ballets, and wrote several books, including "The Improviser's Bible."

Loussier was a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts and was awarded the French Legion of Honour. He received a Grammy nomination in 1974 for his album "Palais des Congrès".

Loussier is survived by his wife, Alison, and three daughters. No information is available currently about funeral services.
